Davis’ warm tone breathed life into the divergent characters of each song and filled the space over Jarrar’s rather punchy yet virtuosic performance on the piano.

La Vestale

At Teatro Grattacielo, we are driven by a fundamental mission: to promote and preserve the performances of rare operatic masterpieces. This season, we are thrilled to align ourselves with the global celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the legendary soprano, Maria Callas. These momentous celebrations are graciously supported by UNESCO.

We invite you to embark on a journey into history as we revive the remarkable opera, La Vestale, composed by Gaspare Spontini. This particular opera holds special significance in Callas’ career, as she mesmerized audiences during its performance on Teatro Alla Scala’s opening night in 1954, brilliantly directed by the renowned Italian film director Luchino Visconti, has only graced the stage of the Metropolitan Opera once, way back in 1926.

Now, almost a century later, Teatro Grattacielo proudly brings the historic 1954 version of La Vestale back to the vibrant city of New York.

Awakenings

Thousands lived to sleep…it’s not a fairy tale, but the incredible true story of Dr. Sacks, a young neurologist faced with treating victims of a mysterious sleeping-sickness epidemic of the early 20th century, a phenomenon of history nearly forgotten. Awakenings visits Sacks’ journey of perseverance and compassion that brought his ‘frozen’ patients back to being – but not to the world they left behind. With our current trials, this distinct retelling of the possibility of new life is even more resonant today.

Join Odyssey Opera in partnership with Boston Modern Orchestra for the East Coast premiere of Awakenings, a moving tale of hope, loss, and transformation.

Opera on The Avenue

Join us for the culmination of the first phase of Opera on the Avenue! The free day-long festival will feature live performances, food, community vendors, and activities for kids. The highlight of the event will be a ticketed premiere performance created by soprano and writer Adrienne Danrich, focused on the story of African-American opera singer Anne Wiggins Brown, the first Bess in Gershwin’s iconic opera Porgy and Bess. Ms. Brown grew up in Old West Baltimore, just two blocks from the Arch Social Club where her father was a prominent early member.

Emmy-winning soprano, writer, and educator Adrienne Danrich, whose specialty is inviting the audience to listen, feel, and be inspired, is the lead creative on the project. Ms. Danrich has created an extraordinary program amplifying Anne Wiggins Brown's story, honoring her life and legacy in opera, spoken word, poetry, and dance.

This project is in partnership with the Arch Social Community Network, the Enoch Pratt Free Library, the Black Arts District, the No Boundaries Youth Organizers, and the Shake and Bake Family Fun Center. Special thank you to our event media sponsor, WYPR.

At Musée D’Orsay, the group begins to discuss the painting Ramsès dans son harem, when they unexpectedly summon a feminist vampire named Gustave.
